Plate Lithography for beginners & improvers

Lithography is a wonderful way to explore mark making. Of all the print processes it allows for variety and spontaneity in drawing. Drawing directly onto the sensitive surface of either a plate or a stone, the image is stabilised with a mild acid and is then rolled up with printing ink and printed. This can be in colour or black.
The process is based on grease and water not mixing and whilst printing, the stone is always kept damp and the drawing and printing inks are greasy.

Wood engraving

Wood Engraving is an art form that grew up in the 18th century to sit alongside text in metal type, printed on the manual presses of the day. Lines and textures are engraved with a range of tools on the end grain of a hardwood block, often a synthetic substitute nowadays, printed as a “relief” print.
