Compass Arts Mini Camp: Earth Week For campers ages 3 - 6 years old M-F 9am-1pm, June 26 to June 30, 2023 Taught by the Compass Arts staff Compass Arts Mini Camps are running Mondays-Fridays, June 26th-July 28 (excluding the week of July 4th) from 9am-1pm. Inspired by the multidisciplinary nature of the Compass Arts early childhood educators, Mini Camp presents an opportunity for artists ages 3-6 years old to explore a variety of modes of expression. From visual art, to dance and movement, to yoga, music, and storytelling, there is something for everyone to love, discover, and express in a week’s worth of play-based learning experiences at Mini Camp. Our weekly themes will serve to guide and inspire our discussions and art making. This year, we will explore the elements. Every day will include mindfulness practices and plenty of free play inside and outside the center. Please send your camper with a snack and lunch, and note that mini campers must be fully potty trained. Earth week (June 26-30): clay, land art, recycled materials and caring for our planet will take center stage this week. Air week (July 10-14): we will work together to build dancing sculptural forms that harness the power of wind. Dance and movement exploration will focus on deep breathing and fluidity. Fire week (July 17-21): fire, though dangerous, is a powerful force. We will discuss the use of fires as a centerpiece for storytelling and song, and build a fire inspired sculpture together using natural materials and found objects. Charcoal drawing and harnessing the power of that great ball of fire, the sun, will find their way into our art making as well. Water week (July 24-28): water colors, water play, moving flowing water through engineered contraptions! This week will be ripe with wonder and amazement at the many ways that this last element can be encountered, played with, and harnessed for fun and creative endeavors.

Summer Snaps! Photography Camp Monday-Friday, 10am-2pm, July 31 to August 4, 2023 For students 11-14 years old Taught by Flux Photo Collective: Lesly Deschler Canossi, Flynn Larsen & Eve Morgenstern We look at images all the time, but how do we make photos that tell our OWN story? Summer Snaps is a week-long workshop for youth who are curious about photography and want to learn more about how to make great pictures. In the first part of this workshop, students will learn the foundations of photography using digital cameras so that they can have more control over making images. We will explore lighting, portraiture, landscape, and still life through hands-on activities that include alternative process photography. We will have fun with hand-painted papers and the sun, making anthotypes (photographs made by using plant dyes), cyanotypes, and a camera obscura (a room-size pinhole camera) made in our studio space. Need a camera for the week? We have a limited number to lend (please note this at registration). Note: this workshop is suited for youth just starting out with photography and also for returning campers from last summer who want to go deeper into making photographs and spend more time experimenting with alternative processes. Flux Photo Collective was founded in 2021 in Beacon, NY by Lesly Deschler Canossi, Eve Morgenstern, and Flynn Larsen out of a shared studio space where they support each other's work. As a collective, the three pool their expertise and experience to engage with the community through teaching, exhibitions, and events. A $35 materials fee will be added on to the final price of the camp.
