This session is designed for people who work with African American men, and seek to gain an understanding of how specific Black cultural and racial identity attributes can influence (and promote) a therapeutic alliance, well-being, healthy social identity, and strategies for resisting oppression. Seven core cultural features will be emphasized: Improvisation, Time, Spirituality, Communality, Oral Tradition, Rhythm (alternation and synchrony), and Expressiveness—“ITS CORE” for short.

This advanced training is designed to provide attendees the skill set needed to assess complex diagnostic cases. Attendees will increase their skills in differential diagnosis of eating disorders when working with African American clients. Attendees will gain advanced clinical interviewing skills to identify comorbid conditions and overlapping symptoms.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe each of the eating and feeding disorders identified in the DSM-5 and in the literature.
  2. Identify the characteristics and differences between each of the feeding and eating disorder diagnoses.
  3. Explain the process and impact had on clinicians who do extensive feeding and eating disorder work.
  4. Describe and summarize the importance of self-care for clinicians and allied professionals who work with feeding and eating disorders.
  5. Explain ways in which culture impacts conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment of feeding and eating disorders.
  6. Discuss ways in which ethnicity, race and intersectionality impact feeding and eating disorder diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
  7. Examine ways in which language and interpretation can develop into triggers and distractions in eating disorder treatment.
  8. Summarize the ways in which ethics and laws impact eating disorder treatment protocols.
  9. Demonstrate the ability to incorporate legal, ethical, cultural and clinical guidelines for feeding/ eating disorders into an interactive workshop.
