Working in the care and support sectors, whether that be in residential care or in the NHS as a manager or clinical lead; or as a social worker ; or as a probation officer, is all about making critical decisions – decisions which can a significant (possibly even a permanent) effect on the lives of those in your care.

Such decision making is not to be taken lightly and yet, surprisingly, there appears to be very little specialist training available to assist those who have to make such decisions.

But all that is about to change.

On 2nd – 4th April 2019, and following extensive development work, the Occam Group will be running a 3-day course in Cardiff designed specifically for all managers involved in the care and support sectors. Entitled “Rethinking Decisions”, this is no ordinary decision making programme.

Developed with the aid of Dr Claire Mould PhD, the CEO of the mental health charity Cintre (who are one of the partners in the Occam Group), the training material used is drawn from a wide spectrum of national and international sources.

These authorities encompass not only UK Serious Case Reviews and official enquiries into NHS hospitals (for example Gosport War Memorial Hospital) but also psychological research from the US Naval Air Warfare Centre; the findings of the 1912 Board of Enquiry into the sinking of RMS Titanic; and the aircraft collision at Tenerife Airport in 1977 which cost 583 lives.

In order to give delegates the maximum benefit they are not only offered numerous interactive exercises but also a practical model for critical decision making which is based on a tried and tested methodology applicable to all situations.
