The Boggess Elementary PTA is hosting a chess tournament on Thursday April 4th at 6:00pm in the gym. Join us for a fun night of competitive game play!

Attendees. This tournament is open to student of Boggess Elementary only. A maximum of 50 students can be accommodated.

Parents. Parents must remain on campus as their child competes and vacate the tournament area (gym) to reduce noise and distraction for the players. The cafeteria will be available as a seating area for waiting parents. The tournament will be supervised by PTA Boggess volunteers and Enrichment Chess personnel.

Food and Drink. No food or drink will be allowed in the tournament area. Players and parents are welcome to bring snacks or dinner to the cafeteria during the event.

Awards and Trophies. The Boggess PTA is providing awards and trophies will be given to the winners of each bracket at the end of the event.

Tournament Structure. This an unrated, non-USCF tournament event. There will be 2 brackets:

1.) Kindergarten - 2nd grade
2.) 3rd - 5th grade.

Brackets will be set up in a single elimination format and seeded randomly. Time controls on the games will be 20 minutes. The atmosphere for this event is meant to be fun and positive.

Tournament Guidelines.

1.) Good Etiquette, Decorum, and Good Sportsmanship must be observed. Rudeness, disruptive behavior, and bad sportsmanship can lead to forfeiture of game or removal from tournament. Players will shake hands before and after each game.

2.) Touch-Move Rules. Touching a piece signals intent and touched pieces must be moved legally. Release of touched piece ends the player’s turn. Players cannot take back moves or change their minds after releasing their touched piece.

3.) No Talking during tournament games. One warning will be given, but continued talking will result in forfeiture of game or removal from tournament. During a game, players are allowed to say:

Check
Checkmate
White to move
Black to move
Adjust
Raise their hand for a judge to quietly resolve a problem

4.) All checkmates must be confirmed by a judge.

5.) Games that have not finished during the allotted time will be judged based on points or position.

6.) Judges’ decision will be final.
