Integrating Spirit & Breath into Psychotherapy: An Introduction to Breathwork

Experience the transformative nature of rhythmic mediation through the power of breath.

Breathwork is an active form of mediation in which participants collectively engage in rhythmic breathing techniques to music. The process inspires expanded states of awareness that helps participants to reduce stress and gain clarity, while internally connecting with spirit. Participants have the opportunity to reconnect with their authentic sense of self and develop the skills to begin a self-healing process.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the concept of spirit utilizing an African-Centered/Black Psychology theoretical framework.
  2. Summarize methods for integrating the concept of spirit into personal and clinical practice.
  3. Define spirit, spirituality, and religiosity.
  4. Attendees will build clinical competence by cultivating or deepening an active meditation practice.
  5. Discuss each participant’s subjective experience relative to the group activity.

NOTE | First time participants must attend both the Friday and Saturday Session.

Returning attendees are welcome to register for both days or Saturday only. If you are a returning attendee, please check your email for the registration code.

FAQ’s

  1. Is Breathwork similar to the deep breathing exercises I do with clients?
The breath is used to assist participants to enter a trans-like state; however, the experience of Breathwork goes beyond relaxation exercises. The use of music coupled with the group experience provides a powerful interaction for participants.

  2. Will attending this session train me to facilitate Breathwork with my clients?
These sessions are designed for you to begin the process of personal self transformation which is needed prior to becoming a facilitator. Attending a single session is not sufficient for you to become a competent facilitator. However, this is the first step in the journey. Dr. Lewis will discuss the training process during this session.

  3. What is meant by group meditation?
Participants lay individually on mats in a shared space.

  4. Are we going to breathe the entire time?
Well, yes and no (smile)! You will breathe normally, but the meditation portion does not last the entire time. Time is spent processing the experience and engaging in didactic instruction. Typically the active meditation lasts 1.5 - 2 hours.

  5. What is the point of doing the sessions multiple times?
Continued participation enables you to move towards a space of working through and healing old emotional blockages while allowing your true essence to come forward. Like exercise, counseling, or other forms of therapy, Breathwork is an amazing journey when experienced repeatedly, rather than a finite point.
