About This Course

EMDR Therapy can be highly effective with children and teens, but complex cases require advanced case conceptualization and clinical interventions. This six hour workshop is designed to take you beyond Basic EMDR Training so you can work more confidently with children who present with complex trauma, including attachment injury, abuse, and neglect. These children need a specialized approach that facilitates successful relational resourcing, development of affect regulation skills, and substantial titrated processing work to support comprehensive EMDR treatment.

This presentation will explore relevant neuroscience and will address issues of affect regulation including skill deficits and the ways in which early care templates impact current self-care. You will learn how to overcome common obstacles to identifying and accessing traumatic material. You will learn when and how to implement advanced processing strategies to address therapeutic blockages and actively triggered disturbance.

Material will follow the Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy whenever possible and any deviations from that model will be explained to participants so that they will be able to make effective clinical adaptions for this population. This workshop will primarily consist of lecture with a one-hour practicum at the end of the day.

Thanks to the Florida Network of Child Advocacy Centers and the Nancy J. Cotterman Center for sponsoring this training!

Participants Will Learn To

-Integrate current neuroscience research into their understanding of the effects of childhood trauma and neglect.

-Conceptualize complex child presentations in terms of the Adaptive Information Processing model.

-Apply skills for effective Phase 1 History Taking.

-Develop skills for effective Phase 2 Preparation of children with complex presentations.

-Recognize and address dissociative symptoms in children.
