Hurt Not Hyper: An Ethical Approach to Disentangling Trauma from ADHD
This workshop will explore the common symptoms related to trauma exposure in youth and how these thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can often be misunderstood for disruptive behavior disorders such as ADHD. Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder and lead to misdiagnosis. This misdiagnosis can create numerous treatment issues including youth being prescribed mind-altering medications that are not appropriate for their true diagnoses, lack of attention to trauma recovery and possible creation of other mental health issues due to the youth and the family’s frustration with ineffective treatment.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe common trauma-related symptoms in youth.
- Identify the difference between trauma responses and disruptive behavior disorders.
- Use ethical approaches to avoid misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment.
