Law Enforcement & First responders have a unique culture and are exposed to numerous traumatic events throughout their career. Few mental health providers understand the unique challenges, as well as needs of this population. The workshop/seminar series is designed to assist mental health clinicians in gaining the necessary knowledge, awareness, understanding, skills, and cultural competency to effectively work with first responders. Instructor will also describe their experiences supporting first responders and present research describing the unique mental health challenges and interventions used to address their issues.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify cultural components for law enforcement and first responder populations such as standard operating procedures, shift work/schedules, and barriers to treatment
  2. Discuss the complexities and challenges of job; and common mental health disorders first responders commonly exhibit.
  3. Describe red flags and stress reactions to the trauma exposure and other job hazards
  4. Describe the impact of law enforcement and first responder’s career and organizational demands on their interpersonal
    relationships
  5. Provide real-life scenarios and events; and discuss research based interventions utilized to provide support
  6. Discuss implications and future collaborative goals between the mental health profession and public safety organizations.
