Coutts - Fundamentals of Drawing and Composition

Classes are nonrefundable.

Classes are open to students of ALL skill levels and experience. Since drawing is fundamental to all of the visual arts, this class is STRONGLY recommended for students wanting to develop and/or improve their drawing and painting skills.

The class will address the use of the design elements of line, shape, value, color and texture as well as provide an introduction to various types of drawing mediums. Students will also learn the basic principles of linear and atmospheric perspective and learn how to successfully use them in order to convey the illusion of depth in their drawings and paintings.

Each class consists of a lecture and demonstration by the instructor followed by in-class participation by the students in various studio projects. Students will receive individual guidance as well as a professional critique of their work.

Materials List
• Drawing Pencils
H, 2H, 4H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B

• Handheld Pencil Sharpener

• Vine Charcoal (Soft)

• 9 x12 Sketch Pad
(You may wish to get TWO sketch pads. One with a smooth surface and one with a textured surface.)
This will be used for more refined/finished drawings.

• Large (18 x 24) Newsprint Pad
This will be used for in-class drawings and practice. It is less expensive than regular drawing
paper and allows you to be less concerned with “wasting” paper.

• Kneaded Eraser

• Pink Pearl Eraser

• Clickable Pencil Eraser (Optional, but highly recommended)

• Tracing Paper
I recommend buying a ROLL of tracing paper. It is less expensive, and works great.

• 18” metal straightedge with a non-slip backing

Recommended places to buy art supplies: These are online, and less expensive than Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. Also, you often don’t have to pay sales tax. Usually you will get items you order in less than a week. Sometimes they even throw in some surprises!
