Hoffert- Exploring Pastels

Classes are nonrefundable.

Participants will take their representational pastel paintings from inception to finished pieces. There will be 30 minutes of instruction and then one on one assistance with each student’s work. The focus will be on using the different soft pastels and the various surfaces and tools. Composition, color and value and techniques will be covered.

Supply List
• Photographs you’ve taken and would like to paint or photos from magazines. • Drawing board. Masonite or similar hard board aprox. 15”x16” or 24”x26”
• Soft pastel sticks (not oil pastels). The more colors you have the better Recommended brands to begin: Rembrandt Sets, Richeson Half Stick Set, Sennelier Half Stick Set, Blick Sets, Unison Half Stick Set.
More brands are available. The premier brands are pricy but you get what you pay for. Terry Ludwig and Great American are two good American brands of handmade pastels. Many handmade pastels are made in Europe. All brands work fine together.
You will get to try the instructor’s own sticks so you can experience them.

Suggestions but not necessary-
• Hard Pastel Sticks such as Prismacolor
• Pastel Pencil Sets
• Pastel paper - Art Spectrum Colourfix, Pastelmat and/or Uart 400.

Additional suggestions items:
1 roll of White artist tape(recommended) or masking tape (no blue or green tape) two medium binder clips, 1 roll light weight Aluminum Foil, apron, paper towels or soft cloth.
