BOLD COLORS, BOLD SHAPES!

Sally has been teaching schoolteachers as well as artists how to teach art or improve their
personal skills for over 50 years! She has a knack for guiding students through a lesson so that
they feel successful and proud of their creations.

In this workshop, Sally will demonstrate her methods for creating the dynamic colors and simple
shapes that have earned her awards in numerous art societies.
Using tube watercolors and a “Skipper Paintbrush” on dry watercolor paper, taped onto a board,
Sally will use “lots of pigment and not much water”.

This will be repeated a second time using a new color and brushing it directly onto the first layer. Possibly a third color will be added on top of the others, all without allowing the colors to dry between layers. The result will be new strong, brilliant, and unusual color combinations! Not muddy as one would expect if they had been scrubbed on and/or had used lots of water.
Students will notice that she does not mix the colors on her palette, as in a traditional way…but
directly on the paper.

The class will then experiment with their own paints using this method.
Sally will encourage them to find new combinations, and unusual glowing colors. With this new approach to watercolor, the class will search their photos and inspirational subject matter for images that can be simplified into bold shapes and interesting compositions.
With a very simple layout sketch, the students will proceed to fill the shapes with new-found
layered colors and develop successful results. At the end of the day, a constructive critique
session will be held.

The result – successful, encouraged, happy artists!
