The Art and Alchemy of Sketch Comedy

Comedy is an art form, like sculpting butter. Just like butter-sculpting, you need to understand your tools and materials so you don't accidentally cut off your greasy fingertips. In this class, you will craft comedy skills one by one with each new tool built upon the last, ultimately transforming you into the ultimate multi-tool for butter-sculpting clowns.

We will trigger this transformation through writing exercises, critique, and collaboration. This is not an improv-heavy writing class, it focuses on writing and discussion. By the end of the 12-week course, you will have bunches of finished sketches in your portfolio, many ideas for future sketches, a collection of contact info for potential show collaborators, and a roadmap for your comedy future. The goal isn’t just to teach the skills, but to nurture your future comedy success whether this means putting on a show, starting a comedy channel, or just confusing people at the mall.

Anders has 2 decades of experience teaching, writing, directing, and producing sketch comedy and a lifetime of fanatically researching classic and contemporary comedy like some people study conspiracy theories.

A word of warning: There is a session devoted to offensive material and shock value. Expect to be offended and expect to offend. Comedy is Art. Art is sometimes confrontational.

Every Sunday (excluding Easter Sunday), March 6 through May 29, 1:30 pm-4:30 pm
