136th Noborigama Kiln Firing - A Collaborative Multi-Day Event

Join us for the 136th firing of the Noborigama Kiln!

A multi-day event for ceramic artists and interested folks to participate in the firing of ceramic pieces in a historic six-chambered, wood-fired climbing kiln built in 1971 at Woolman in the town of Nevada City, nestled in the Sierra foothills of California. The firing will be facilitated by Dik Hotchkiss, the designer of the kiln and master instructor who has been teaching wild clay ceramics at Woolman for many years.

$125 fee is for people who wish to fire pieces in the kiln. Participating artists should plan to bring high fire ceramic pieces to the event, glazes and firing materials will be provided for this collaborative experience. Shelf size is 14"x16" (pieces should fit on this shelf size, you are not limited to this overall size).

Spectators and guests are encouraged to donate to Woolman to ensure these events can continue on our campus.

This is a multi-day firing event and participating artists are asked to commit to helping throughout the process. For those coming from out of town: camping is not allowed on the Woolman campus this year. We have affordable A-frames available for rent and cabins for larger groups available as well (email shannonb@woolman.org to reserve your spot at Woolman). There is also lots of local tent and RV campgrounds in the Grass Valley and Nevada City area, email morgans@woolman.org if you need help sourcing a site.

A short film about the making of the Noborigama kiln can be seen here:

Note: We plan the kiln firing for the safest time of year. That said weather and fire conditions are always a concern in the Sierra Foothills. Although very unlikely, dates may shift to accommodate extreme conditions.
