Wildlife Field Techniques

Research findings are only as powerful as the data used to reach them. In wildlife research, field data comes in many complex forms, requiring a robust set of skills and knowledge to collect. Field technicians are the frontline of data collection and must possess the ability to properly gather and decipher information from observations made in the field. This course will introduce participants to common field techniques used in mammalian wildlife research, including:

  • Accurately collecting and recording data
  • Deploying remote cameras
  • Using radio (VHF) telemetry
  • Interpreting wildlife track and sign
  • Performing wildlife field necropsies
  • Collecting biological samples
  • Investigating mortality sites

The Wildlife Field Techniques course is intended for participants with little to no field experience, but is also beneficial for those wishing to refresh or build upon their existing skills. The lessons in this course can be applied to a wide range of outdoor and natural resource professions. Adults (18+) of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate.

Location and amenities

All course activities will take place outdoors at the Bush School Methow Campus in Mazama, WA. The campus is open to the public and contains many hiking trails and corners to explore, with wildlife sightings not uncommon.
