NOTE: This course will be held in person at Oak Island. All students, staff and faculty must be fully vaccinated to attend the course. Please bring proof of vaccination with you.

Experience the joys of plein-air painting at the scenic Oak Island, located just 30 minutes from downtown Portland, Oregon. Oak Savannah, views of Mount St. Helens and spring wildlife will inspire both experienced and beginning artists alike.
Sarah Burns will support students through the whole process of preparing painting materials, studying the landscape, creating composition, exploring natural color palettes, and encouraging personal artistic expression. Join this inclusive painting class to gain a new experience, or refine your outdoor painting skills.
Wednesday, April 13 and 20 - 6 - 7:15 pm Zoom slide talk on intro to landscape painting, composition, colors outside, atmospheric perspective, painting and identifying clouds and materials prep.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 21, 22, 23 from 10 am - 2 pm Paint out at Oak Island. Demo and one to one support.
PREREQUISITES:
Figure drawing experience
SUPPLIES:
Drawing Materials
Pencil of choice – portable and easy
kneaded eraser
Sketch paper for working out compositions
tape and drawing board – optional
Plein Air Easel – If you don’t have a plein air easel, I have some portable easels you can borrow.
Small bag for collecting your trash
disposable gloves – optional
Hat and sunscreen – VERY IMPORTANT
Water – for you to drink, comfortable clothes and shoes for working outside, lunch or snacks
Materials List:
Paint – Can be oils, gouache and watercolor or acrylic - each student should choose the type of material they prefer to work with. Gouache is a great medium to start with for beginners.

Four to Eight Brushes – long handle, hog bristle flat or filberts, size 4 and 6
Two to Four Brushes – long handle, soft round, size 0 and 2

If you are using Acrylic
