Join me for this tour of two of the current fantastic exhibitions of Irish art at IMMA!

Patricia Hurl - Irish Gothic

Irish Gothic is the first major exhibition of Patricia Hurl’s work spanning over 40 years and features over 70 of the artist's paintings and drawings. Most of the works are oil paintings of various sizes which demonstrate her energetic expressionistic style, figurative but nearing abstraction at times. Sketchbooks, diaries, magazines, and newspaper cuttings are included in the exhibition and give an insight into her process. The subjects range from the personal with self-portraits to those of Irish significance and wider comments on the position of women in patriarchal systems around the world. This is a unique chance to see the works of such an extraordinary artist. A must see!

Championing Irish Art
The Mary and Alan Hobart Collection

An exhibition dedicated to the Pyms Gallery will expand on the role that its founders, Mary and Alan Hobart, played in establishing a new canon of Irish art, alongside the political risks taken by the Gallery in promoting Irish art in the midst of the turbulence of the 1980s and against the backdrop of the Troubles. Some of the best Irish artists of the 20th century are included and there are so many fascinating stories behind these paintings from moments in Irish history from 1916, to WWI, to the Troubles not the mention the development of Irish art from academic realism through various avant-garde movements to Abstraction and beyond.

Artists include; Jack B. Yeats, William Crozier, Rita Duffy, Micheal Farrell, Grace Henry, Cecil King, John Lavery, F.E. McWilliam, William Orpen, William Scott, Mary Swanzy and Charles Tyrrell.
