Reading Skills for Entering 1st and 2nd Grade
Session 2: August 7-31
Jumpstart reading skills before school starts! This 8-session class is designed for both entering first graders AND entering second graders. The curriculum will be tailored to the individual needs of the students who enroll.
First Grade is often referred to as “The Reading Year” because it’s when reading instruction kicks into high gear. Students who have not MASTERED foundational literacy skills in kindergarten or first grade will get further behind without intervention. This course will serve as an extra boost for entering first graders, and a catch-up class for entering second graders who's reading skills lagged in first grade.
In this four week program, your entering first or second grader will improve their reading fluency, spelling, handwriting, reading comprehension, and improve reading stamina and confidence.
Co-taught with a music teacher, this program will also encourage the joy of learning with musical play breaks in which children will improve phonological awareness through:
- rhymes and songs that encourage movement
- vocabulary activities
- storytelling
- phoneme isolation games
This four week program is for entering First and Second Graders (ages 6-8).
- Classes will meet at Kailua Church of the Nazarene for 60-minutes on Monday and Thursday afternoons (4:00-5:00) from August 7-August 31.
- A pre- and post-assessment will be conducted by the instructor, a Certified Birth-12th Grade Literacy Specialist. Therefore, you will start the new school year with clarity about your child's strengths and weaknesses as a reader, which will allow you to support and advocate for your child's unique learning needs throughout the year.
- How much your child's reading improves this summer is dependent on their unique literacy profile and consistent participation. Participation in all 8 sessions is STRONGLY encouraged, or else the rate of reading growth will be much slower.
Cost of the course is subsidized by a City and County of Honolulu grant.
*The cost of this 8 session course and mini-literacy assessment is usually $370 PLUS the cost of materials. Thanks to a partnership with The City and County of Honolulu, HEARTS (Hawai’i Education of the Arts), and Fiddle-I-Fee, this summer class will be FREE for all participants. However, participation is strongly encouraged; no more than one excused class should be missed.
