Differentiated Instruction for MLLs
Virtual
December 6 and 13, 2023
10:00a-12:30p
Virtual Meeting (Zoom)
OVERVIEW
Part I of this professional development series will focus on differentiating curriculum and instruction for MLLs. Participants will explore many strategies for providing different access points so that all students in a heterogeneous class can engage in a task that contains the same degree of higher order thinking. Part II of this session will dig more deeply into the concept of amplifying instruction for MLLs. Participants will explore amplification activities that reinforce new learning by enabling students sufficient “at bats” to rehearse content in low-stakes ways before being asked to apply it.
MEETING OBJECTIVES
Participants will be able to...
- Articulate what distinguishes differentiation scaffolds that grant access to complexity from those that reduce complexity.
- Differentiate a series of written academic activities to make them more accessible to students with a wide range of English and academic proficiency levels.
- Select, customize, and implement amplification activities that reinforce new concepts for MLLs.
- Categorize and sequence amplification activities to move from Level 1 to Level 2 and reduce cognitive overload
