Personal licence applicant training for PIL categories A and B
Training for personal licence applicants has been mandatory since 1994. The syllabus is set by the Home Office.
The modules are divided into core modules and species specific elements. Candidates must attend all core modules, but may attend any combination of the species modules. Existing licence holders wishing to add an additional species need only attend the relevant species module.
The modules cover the following topics:
Core modules:
Module E1L: legislation and ethical considerations (mandatory for all personal licence categories)
PILA: Principles of animal care and use (mandatory for all personal licence categories)
PILK: Humane methods of killing (mandatory for all personal licence categories)
PILB: Introduction to anaesthesia (mandatory for category B licence applicants)
The following species groups will be covered on this course:
Small laboratory animals – mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits
Farm animals– cattle, sheep and goats, pigs and mini-pigs
Poultry and avian eggs – chickens, turkeys, game birds and waterfowl.
Fish - Zebrafish, freshwater fish and marine fish
All written assessments will take place on Friday via Zoom
