Description

Woven Shibori is a variation on traditional shibori dyeing that is dependent on the weaving process to create dyed patterns in hand-woven cloth. In this class, we will explore a variety of woven shibori patterns and amazing dye interactions.

Please ensure that you have time to weave samples between classes 1 and 2. Two looms, 1 for warp and 1 for weft shibori, will be set up at TFAC prior to class 1. These will be used for demonstrating and practicing the techniques during Class 1.

Students will weave their own weft shibori samples at home in the week between Classes 1 and 2. Samples will be dyed in classes 2 and 3 at TFAC.

My woven shibori process incorporates two stages of dyeing: 1)base color and 2) overdye. The color combinations are infinite and so it is most interesting if all participants share their results before starting a larger project. This class will use Procion MX fiber reactive dyes. If there is interest, we can also try making a vat dye (which requires a different type of dye and heat) for the second overdye step.

Prerequisites Advanced Beginner/Intermediate: Must be able to warp your loom (either 4 or 8 harness) at home and be able to read and follow a draft. You will need to be able to weave with 2 shuttles when weaving the weft shibori at home.

Materials to be provided by/additional instructions for students

  • Two 8 harness looms, one for WEFT shibori and one for WARP shibori, will be set up at TFAC prior to Class 1 for demonstrating and student practicing before weaving their weft shibori samples at home.
  • All participants are encouraged to weave a few samples on the WARP shibori loom before Class 2.
  • Students will need to weave 10 or more weft shibori samples at home in the week between Classes 1 & 2.
  • Drafts for samples will be sent out to participants before the class begins. The warp will be 8 to 10” wide and each sample should be 6-8 inches long.
  • Recommended yarns: cotton, rayon, bamboo about the size of 5/2 perle cotton in either natural or white for both warp and weft. - Bring two empty bobbins to Class 1.

Materials/Equipment to be provided by TWG:

  • Two 8-harness guild looms are required for demonstrations:
  • WEFT Shibori: Most participants will weave the WEFT shibori samples at home. A demo loom will be made available at TFAC for those that do not have an 8-harness loom and would like to try alternate treadlings.
  • WARP shibori: this technique requires a supplemental warp which can be handled with a second beam or weighted warp. Participants will be strongly encouraged to drop in to TFAC to weave a few samples on this loom.
