Hoffert - Mixed Media Using Oil and Cold Wax

Classes are nonrefundable.

Oil and cold wax techniques are exciting and use a variety of tools to create unique
pieces of art. Paintings are loose and often quite abstracted but can be more
realistic if that is your goal. Often the painter has no beginning sense of what the
painting will become - these paintings are very intuitive and develop as paint is
added or subtracted from the surface.

Cold wax is an oil painting medium that we will mix with Galkyd. The use of cold
wax with oils is a way to extend the paint film, shorten drying time, create and
highlight textures and produce translucence. We will use tools for layering and
scraping back to reveal previous layers. This method needs no heat as encaustic
does but can create the beautiful translucence of an encaustic painting. The leanto-fat rule doesn’t apply as it does in other oil paintings.

We will use wood panels primarily but also try oil paper so you will have a variety of
surfaces to experience. No gesso is needed and the tooth of the paper adds to the
overall effect.

We will use multiple layers beginning with acrylic under-paintings and add
texture with palette knives, squeegee and a variety of other tools. Texture will be
part of our initial work and we will use oil bars, graphite crayons, graphite
powder, paper or sand to add marks, body, and texture.

You will need the following supplies:

  • Gamblin Galkyd 8.5 oz.
  • Gamblin cold wax 16 oz or larger
