Return to Theatre:
An Acting & Scene Work Class for Adults
Thursdays, 7pm-9pm,April 18 to June 6, 2024
Taught by Elizabeth Audley
Class fee $320 ($40 per 2 hour class)

For many adults, a love of Theatre has been left behind or pushed to the side over the years. But participating in Theatre makes our lives richer in so many ways. Let Compass Arts welcome you back to the stage! Originated by Hampton Fluker, an accomplished stage and screen actor who trained with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and taught this Spring by actor and director Elizabeth Audley, Return to Theatre will challenge and reward both established theatre artists and beginners.

This class is for all students: those who took Return to Theatre last Fall and this Winter and wish to continue the journey, as well new students of all levels of experience. The only requirement is a curious mind and a generous spirit.

The class will introduce a series of ensemble-building, sensory-awakening, imaginative, and skill-sharpening exercises, and apply those lessons to classical and contemporary text, through work on scenes and monologues.

Students can expect to learn how to create authentic characters through conservatory-style training guided by the methods of Stanislavski, Laban, Bogart, Hagen, Meisner, and other great thought leaders from the history of Theatre. Throughout the course, students will learn how to navigate questions regarding the text they are working with, open themselves up to new possibilities in their storytelling journeys, and awaken their natural curiosity and understanding of the human condition. The class will allow participants to work collaboratively, hone their craft, and gain valuable performance experience.

Per the Compass Arts philosophy, this class will be process-oriented, not product-oriented. Students will learn to identify their strengths as performers and what might hold them back, building a toolkit for authentic storytelling that can be used in professional settings both on and off the stage. The goal is to leave a lasting imprint on the participants. Hence, they continue down the path of self-expression, empathy for others, and process-oriented character development while forming the foundation for a supportive adult theatre community in Beacon.
