Pencil drawing for Beginners! Bring a #2 pencil, an eraser, and a positive attitude to our first class.
Anyone can draw! Think you can’t? Well, it’s possible to develop drawing skills by observing the world from an artist’s point of view. We’ll do simple exercises that will help wake up your creative spirit.
**Students are required to purchase Betty Edwards' excellent Spiral Bound Book from Amazon (link below) or from a trusted source. The cost of the book is an extra fee of around $25.**

SUPPLY LIST for “Anyone can Draw”
“Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” spiral-bound workbook by Betty Edwards
Pencils: 2B, 6B
Eraser (Staedler, Pink Pearl)
Pencil sharpener
Tortillion (for blending pencil marks)
A few sheets of scratch paper - typewriter paper is fine

This group is for 2 exercises that get a bit messy
Graphite stick 4B
Gloves
Cheap drop cloth, preferably white or light colored to cover your work area. Sheets, puppy pads, or old bath towels are fine too. We just want to keep the tables and your hands clean.

Black fine-tip low-odor dry-erase marker
Lightweight unframed shower mirror, 5x7 or 6x8. It may be hard to find locally. A year or more ago, there was a 2-pack on Amazon for about $5 that costs ~$8 now, so you might want to get a single mirror. I have a few that people can borrow during class, but not enough for everyone. If you can’t find one, a phone camera will work in a pinch.
Painters tape, for holding mirror on wall or shelf
Black-to-white gray scale/value finder. Try to get one that has holes in it so that you can see a section of a reference image/object through the holes
Good-size artificial flower with leaves/stems (should fit workbook viewfinder)
Cardboard, 8x10 to make frame for workbook’s plastic viewfinder (rear of workbook). Instructions for creating the frame are on Exercise 8 “Drawing your hand on the Plastic Picture Plane” /page 30 of the workbook in the Materials section

Inexpensive purse-sized unruled sketchbook for practicing on the go
Hardware store:
Two 1” spring clamps. Clamp handles should have a flat edge so they can stand up on a flat surface and hold a mirror or viewfinder vertically
