Kern River Outing

Join fellow DCFF members fishing the Kern River and nearby waters. In early autumn the weather is cooler, the flows are down, the bugs are active and some of the best fishing of the year is possible. Kernville is only a 3 1/2 hour drive from Riverside, making it a great weekend fishing destination. Kern guide and life member of DCFF, Chiaki Harami, will assist us in finding good water and rigging properly. With some hiking, there are even possibilities to catch heritage trout. 

Everyone will be responsible for their own lodging. The Kernville Inn, Riverview Inn (rustic) and the Sequoia Lodge (just outside Kernville) are all recommended. Rivernook and River's Edge campgrounds both have showers. There are several good restaurants in Kernville.

We will meet on Saturday morning at the Kernville Fly Shop at 8:00am and head out from there. If you are short on any gear or flies you can stock up there.

For fishing gear, a standard 9’ 5 weight should meet most all of your needs. For nymph fishing, a 10’ 3 or 4 weight rod works well. Have some 7.5’ 4X nylon leaders, 5X Fluoro tippet, and medium size (3/4”) indicators. Chiaki recommends the following flies: Nymphs: #12 to #16: Peacock Frenchie, Skim Shiny, Sexy Walts Worm, #8 Pat's rubber legs, kaufee cup stone, #12 soft hackle hare's ear. Drys: #12 yellow rubber leg Stimilator, #14 to 16 Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, #6 to #8 Red Fuzzy wuzzy, Orange Cicadacator Hoppincator,  

Compared with the Owens, the Kern is a much larger river with less sure footing. Studded or felt soled wading boots will be more stable. A sturdy wading staff is recommended. Wade with care. If you are not a strong wader, consider an emergency flotation devise.  This outing is not structured as an on the water class but rather an introduction to the fly fishing possibilities of the Kern River. The Kern River Fly shop has guides who can help new fishers improve their fishing skills, advance booking is recommeded.
