Course overview

This online interactive tutor mediated course has been developed through a collaboration between the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS UK) International Forum and the James Paget University Hospital. It has been developed with the multi-award-winning Blended Learning team responsible for the Oncoplastic Masters Programme which is the highest qualification in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in the UK. Student feedback from this course has consistently achieved over 95% satisfaction in all domains of education.

The course is flexible and can be completed at your own pace throughout the week at a convenient time for you. It also allows you the opportunity to review any aspect of the course as many times as required. Topics will be released weekly and will take approximately 2 hrs per week to complete over the length of the course which is 12 weeks in total.


Aims

To introduce Staff Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Radiographers, Junior Doctors, Medical Students and Physician Associates, working in the UK and globally to the principles of contemporary Breast Care Practice which is a much-needed service in light of the increasing incidences of breast cancer worldwide.

  • Role of Physiotherapy and Lymphoedema management

Learning Outcomes
  • To obtain in-depth knowledge of the role & responsibilities of key professionals
  • To understand the role of Breast Care Nursing in providing professional, emotional and psychological support in the patients journey through breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and discharge
  • To describe the role and effective working of the MDT
  • To articulate the importance of effective communication skills in patient care
  • To demonstrate understanding and the importance of anatomy, physiology and pathology in breast cancer and benign breast conditions
  • Understanding the principles underlying NHS breast screening services
  • Know the importance of history taking and clinical examination (triple assessment)
  • Knowledge of different types of breast cancer and common presentations
  • To have an understanding of the importance of physiotherapy following breast and axillary surgery
  • Describe the management of lymphodema
  • Knowledge of the common side effects of common chemotherapeutic agents and hormone therapy
