Description

This class will explore methods for developing ideas for woven cloth from a visual source provided by the participant, exploring color, texture and pattern, first off, then on the loom.

After exploring some ideas, we will learn to read and create standard weaving drafts and practice five simple weave structures, using a four shaft loom with direct tie-up. Using this foundation weavers will then be encouraged to be creative on the loom, inspired and guided by their preparatory design work.

Students will take home a sketchbook containing their design work, a basic guide to weaving draft notation, and a woven sampler.

Prerequisites:

New weavers and those interested in color and design. Participants must be able to dress a four shaft loom with a short warp before the class.

Materials to be provided by/additional instructions for students:

Participants may bring their own ready-warped floor or table loom or use one of the Guild looms in Room 1 (guild looms include the use of reeds, shuttles, and bobbins). If needed, help will be provided with warping over two open studio days before the class.

All weaving materials will be provided except warp - the warp should be two yards long and approximately 10” wide of a light, neutral color, such as natural colored wool or cotton, or oatmeal or very pale gray, and set at 10-12 ends per inch according to chosen yarn.

Suitable options:

  • Harrisville Shetland or other Shetland-weight wool for weaving. Shown here.
  • 3/2 cotton or cottolin - matt textured, not pearl or mercerized (e.g. Gist Yarn Mallo or Beam, shown here and here).

Please bring:

  • A visual design source that appeals to you: a printed photo of your own or from a magazine etc OR an object that you love - the subject is not important, but look for colors, texture, shapes and patterns that interest you.
  • Scissors for PAPER (not your best thread snippers!)
  • Blue painters’ tape or Scotch tape
  • Writing pen/pencil and paper for note taking if desired.
  • Spare bobbins

The instructor will contact participants after registration to go into more details on warp and design items.
