Totem is a course focused on hand-building and sculptural techniques, and the exploration of

our inner landscape. We will work on a series of sculptural objects which are personally

meaningful and embody moments, emotions, concepts and experiences. These objects won’t

fulfill a utilitarian purpose. Rather they will serve as a means of exploring ideas and rendering

those parts of our lives that are ineffable as material objects. We’ll discuss the history of

representational ceramics, and the long history of ceramics in human societies. This class is

designed for students who have never touched clay before, as well as students with years of

experience.
