Sashiko-ori or Woven Sashiko challenges weavers to think about design in a different way as they learn to control the intersections of pattern threads in the warp and weft.

Although identified technically as a supplementary warp and weft technique, my investigations of this weave structure were inspired by the exploration of hitomezashi sashiko, a Japanese folk stitching method in which the embroidery threads intersect at right angles to produce beautiful stitched patterns that reinforce, repair or decorate cloth. These lines can be woven into a cloth in the warp or weft and the perpendicular or diagonal lines can be stitched in after the cloth is woven. Another option is to weave both lines in using minimum of six harnesses.

These patterns were woven in Japan, and examples of very similar fabrics are found among ancient Andean textiles, in England, identified as “coarse weave,” and in some Scandinavian pattern books that combine this patterning with stripes or checks.

Students will weave supplementary warp patterns and learn ways to stitch patterns into the cloth which they can take home to work on. They will also experiment with weaving the patterns in both directions and stitching afterwards.

Day One:

  • Students learn about designing sashiko-ori and then select a pattern for their project.
  • Students will then beam the looms at TFAC with warps provided by instructor, and thread their looms according to their selected pattern. In general, beaming takes only a few minutes and threading takes 2-3hour. Back to front warping is recommended, but not a requirement.
  • Begin weaving
  • slide show on the history of this technique will be presented when students need a break from threading or weaving.

Day Two:

  • Students weave sashiko-ori: 1) in warp, 2) in warp and weft, and 3) experiment with different treadlings
  • Experiment with stitching

Day Three:

  • Students experiment with color in weft pattern and background threads, work with negative space.
  • Students may also consider optional threading (rethread some pattern threads). Instructions will be given as part of the workshop.
  • Finish weaving
  • Remove warps from loom to embellish with additional diagonal and other stitching.

Prerequisites for participants

Advanced Beginner/ Intermediate; must be able to warp and thread loom and read a weaving draft.

Materials to be providedby/additional instructions for students

  • *6 or 8 shaft floor or table loom. (A table loom works, but weaving will be slower)
  • Two boat shuttles with bobbins,
  • Little tools (threading, sleying hooks, scissors),
  • Raddle if you have one (we can share),
  • Bobbin winder if you have one (Several available at TFAC, can easily be shared)
  • Optional laptop, smartphone or pad to utilize online design program
  • Graph Paper

*The guild has a limited number of looms available. You will be able to reserve one on the registration form. Any weaving required to finish your project after the workshop must be done at TFAC during Drop-in hours or other prearranged times. Looms may not leave the facility.
