Part 1 - Kiln Conversion

Sat Sept 7th - Sun Sept 8th

10am - 5pm each day

In part 1 of this workshop series we will learn the process of converting used electric kilns into functional, updraft gas reduction kilns. We will convert 2 electric kilns into updraft gas kilns. We will talk about how to prep a soft brick kiln for soda firings. This workshop will include how to get even firings while using a variety of accessible options for burner systems and an exploration in atmospheric soda firing.

Part 1 is ONLY hands on kiln conversion. It does not include firing of pots

Part 2 - Gas Kiln Firing cone 6

Fri Sept 27th - Sun Sept 29th

Friday Sept 27th 6pm - 9pm - Glazing for those who need it. You can bring your glazed pots to the firing on sat

Sat Sept 28th - Loading and Firing - 9am - 5pm (or until firing ends)

Sun Sept 29th - Unloading the kilns! - 1pm - 5pm

In Part 2 we heat things up!

We will glaze our wares on Friday night. For those who choose the studio time option, you can start glazing your wares as soon as they are bisqued during your time in the studio.

If you’re bringing your own bisqued wares to fire you can also join us for glazing on Friday night or pre glaze your pieces with a cone 6 glaze. If you need to come in earlier on Friday to glaze, email Delores.

Saturday morning we start loading the kilns off site. As much as I would love to fire in our small parking lot I don’t want the neighbors to be too alarmed by the crazy potters. We will fire the kilns at one of our instructors' home studio, about 10 mins from the studio. The address will be emailed to attendees.

This amazing conversion Workshop will be taught by Jared Zehmer. Jared earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in ceramics from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He currently lives in Seagrove, North Carolina, working as a journeyman potter while creating his own work at his home studio and refining the skill of repurposing electric kilns into gas reduction kilns.
