Introduction to Java Programming

This course introduces students to object-oriented programming using the Java programming language. Core topics in the context of the Java programming language include object-oriented design concepts including classes, inheritance, interfaces, exception handling, arrays, and elementary sorting and searching algorithms. Students are also introduced to standard Java libraries and features such as error handling, threads, networking, and designing and building graphical user interfaces using AWT and Swing libraries.

Much of the course is project-based, with assignments emphasizing the design of classes and algorithms appropriate to a problem.

Course Goals:

  • Learn about datatypes, loops, arrays (1-dimensional and 2-dimensional), and recursion
  • Understand how inheritance and recursion can be used to solve programs
  • Work on projects to handle file processing and manipulation
  • Explore version control and GitHub
  • Prepare students for Java AP Level course
