Introduction to Glassblowing, a Basic Beginner's class
This class is designed for students who are interested in handmade glass objects and sculpture, but are uncertain if glassblowing is the craft skill they want to develop. Therefore, this class is much shorter than our "Advanced Beginner" class.
The class consists of 7 hours of studio time spread over 2 days (Saturday, Oct 26 and Sunday, Oct 27, 11am-2:30pm) during which time students will learn:
- Molten glass properties and behavior
- How to properly gather molten glass on a blowpipe
- Use of hand tools to shape the glass
- How to apply color to the glass; and
- How to "pop" a starter bubble to initiate blown pieces.
Each student will make at least 2 pieces to take home - a sculpted piece and a blown piece.
Students will work in a 2-person team, alternating between the glass blower (gaffer) and the important role of assisting the gaffer.
Prior experience is not necessary. Age Limit- 14 years old, minimum.
Required Minimum Class Size - 2 students
To practice what you learn, you can continue by taking our "Advanced Beginner" class or schedule private instruction with one of Liberty Arts instructors. See website for details
Each student MUST be able to show proof of full Covid vaccination. Blow pipes will be sterilized between each use.
Eye protection will be provided as needed . Also, students should not wear loose-fitting clothes nor clothes made of synthetic fabric (these melt easily).
