The Vienna Secession – Klimt and Contemporaries (Online and Replay)

The Vienna Secession is an art movement, often understood as part of the broader movement of Art Nouveau. It was a deliberate movement determined to break with the past and create a new art for modern world. The group formed in 1898 and included painters, graphic artists, sculptors and architects. They worked together to create the beautiful Secessionist Building in Vienna and held exhibitions there, even inviting artist from other countries including the Glasgow Four. The most famous of the Austrian founders is of course Gustav Klimt, who's painting The Kiss is one of the most famous paintings in the world. The group broke up around 1905 but many of the artists continued to produce extraordinary art and architecture. There were other too of the next generate or those sidelined including many women who contributed to the movement that are of great interest. This four part course will explore this fascinating art movement, the style and techniques and place it into its context. The best known artists will be presented as well as looking at some of the overlooked figures and controversial elements. There will be time for discussion at the end of each lecture for those watching live to join in. the recorded version for replay will not include the Q&A section in order to allow everyone to have their cameras on.
