Adirondack Mountain Club

The one-day Advanced Map & Compass Bushwhack course begins at the McKenzie Mt. and Haystack Mt. Trailhead along Route 86, between the villages of Ray Brook and Lake Placid, NY. We will do a quick refresher of map bearings, compass bearings, and cover the intricacies of declination at the trailhead before setting off on our 5-mile adventure on/off trail! This course is designed to put your map and compass familiarity into practice. Before registering for this particular course, you should be comfortable reading a map, ready to hike 5+ arduous miles off-trail, and eager to follow your compass. Map & Compass novices are encouraged to register for our upcoming full-day fundamentals courses. Good physical condition, proper clothing, and proper equipment are a must.
