Reading and Writing About Literature II (5-7th)
The fall course, Reading and Writing About Literature II, builds upon the foundation established in the preceding summer course. Students will continue to develop fundamental skills in grammar, mechanics, and usage, focusing on topics such as subject-verb agreement, parallel structure, diction, syntax, thesis formation, and paragraph organization. To reinforce and enhance these skills, classroom instruction will include a wide variety of advanced and challenging worksheets. This approach ensures that students remain familiar with the basics of the writing process while growing in strength and sophistication as writers. These skills will be invaluable for the writing assignments they will encounter in their English courses throughout the upcoming school year. Similar to the summer course, students will be given weekly reading assignments and will submit written responses to the Google Classroom for grading and feedback. However, Reading and Writing About Literature II will feature a broader range of writing, including both fiction and nonfiction. While the engaging short stories from the summer will continue, students will also explore op-ed pieces from newspapers, articles on current events, and excerpts from biographies and memoirs. This diverse selection will offer students a wider range of writing assignments, better preparing them for the various types of writing required in high school and college. Class periods will remain discussion-oriented, starting with group interactions about the reading assignments and followed by collaborative work on the prepared worksheets. Students are expected to actively participate in all classroom exercises and discussions. New students are welcome to join and engage in this enriching learning experience!
