Walking weekend in North Wales
CWC has been offered a special winter deal by CMC Adventure (https://cmcadventure.org.uk/) - also known as the Christian Mountain Centre, which is based near Llanbedr on the North Wales Coast between Barmouth and Harlech. This area is one of the few places in England & Wales where there is a spectacular coastline with beautiful sandy beaches as well as rugged mountains within easy reach.
The accommodation at Bryn-y-Moel (pictured above) is a purpose-built development with 50 beds (in 11 small en-suite dormitories for 2-6 people). Unless the weekend is very popular, it is likely that only 2 or 3 people will be sharing each dormitory. There is ample on-site car parking, but it would be preferable to maximise car sharing. It is also possible to use public transport instead of cars, as there is a railway station at Pensarn (Gwynedd), just ¾ of a mile away. But, be careful not to book tickets to Abergele and Pensarn Station. It should be possible to arrange a lift from the station, so that bags do not have to be hauled uphill to Bryn-y-Moel. Through trains run from Birmingham International and the sections of the journey on the Cambrian Line from Shrewsbury to Dovey Junction and on the Cambrian Coast Line from Dovey Junction to Pensarn provide the most scenic railway journey in Wales.
The price of £115 (discounted from the normal price of £174) will include full board accommodation for 3 nights (including self-prepared packed lunches). It might also be possible to extend the stay for £38.33 per person per night (if 12 or more people want to do this), to enjoy a longer break or to make the long journey to North Wales more worthwhile, as there is nobody staying at Bryn-y-Moel until Friday evening. But anyone doing this will have to arrange their own walks and/or activities.
To everyone attending the weekend, CMC Adventure will offer one or two Activity Days (morning and afternoon activity sessions on Saturday and Sunday), subject to there being a minimum of 12 people participating in each activity. No prior experience is required for any of the activities, as full instruction will be provided for beginners. The activities are not included in the above price and there will be an extra charge of £28.50 per person for a full day (2 activity sessions) or £18.50 per person for a half day (1 activity session). This represents a considerable reduction on the undiscounted prices of £43 for a full day and £28 for a half day.
The following activities will be offered by CMC Adventure:
- Kayaking at Pensarn Harbour (wetsuits, bouyancy aids and helmets provided)
- Open (Canadian) Canoeing at Pensarn Harbour (wetsuits, bouyancy aids and helmets provided)
- Gorge Walking in Cwm Nantcol (wetsuits, bouyancy aids and helmets provided)
- Rock Climbing/Abseiling on Barmouth Slabs (harnesses and helmets provided)
If Activity Days are not required or if anyone wants to stay on for some extra days, there are a number of excellent hard mountain walks on the Rhinogydd mountain range (one of the wildest mountain areas in Britain) and some moderate walks to a nearby hill (Moelfre – 589m) or to the top of a pass through the Rhinogydd mountains known as the Roman Steps (394m). It will also be possible for anyone to organise their own easy walks along stretches of the Wales Coast Path. The path can be accessed from Pensarn Harbour, which is CMC Adventure’s other property that is only a ¾ mile walk down the hill from Bryn-y-Moel.
