Introduction to Mosaics

OVERVIEW. In this introductory class, you will learn about mosaic techniques, types and uses of mosaic tools, and the basics of picassiette mosaic. Picassiette mosaics are made with pieces of china/dishes and found objects.

PROJECT DETAILS. You will make a 9-inch round indoor picassiette mosaic, roughly following one of several design templates that I will email to you upon registration. To make your design your own, you will choose your color scheme and mosaic materials. Available materials will include a wide variety of china/dish pieces in different colors and patterns, along with beads, glass tiles, focal tiles, metal findings, three-D objects, mirror pieces, and more.

CLASS SESSIONS: Each class will consist of two 3-hour sessions, one week apart. You will lay out and glue down your mosaic piece during the first 3-hour class session. You will grout your piece in the second 3-hour session (this probably won't take the full 3 hours). If for some reason you have a conflict for the second class (grouting), I can fit you into a grouting session for another scheduled class.

WHAT IS PROVIDED: 1) All supplies and tools (wood substrate, mosaic materials, tile nippers, glue, aprons, safety glasses, latex gloves, grout, sealant, hanging mechanism, paper towels, etc.); 2) advice and assistance from the instructor, and 3) pictures of the available design templates before the first class so you can begin to think about your color scheme and design.

WHAT TO BRING: 1) Water bottle (if desired), and 2) clothes you don't mind getting stained with glue or grout.
