COIL Virtual Exchange and the Arts

This webinar explores a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) initiative using visual arts to teach Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global citizenship, emphasizing cultural exchange and understanding. Students from three different countries are collaborating on an art project, working through stages including defining a goal, developing a background, and creating an art piece. Findings from surveys from previous semesters indicate that students enjoy the collaborative experience, and interviews revealed that they were able to explore their creative sides despite not being formally trained in the arts. This experience demonstrates that one does not need formal art education to be an artist; with training and practice, anyone can create meaningful artworks. However, we have learned that language barriers can lead to some misunderstandings between students. We suggest integrating language support sessions and enhanced cultural orientation to address these communication challenges and further foster successful international collaboration in arts-based education.
