About this Course:
Adult clients with a history of chronic or prolonged childhood abuse and/or neglect present significant challenges in treatment, particularly in utilizing the standard EMDR protocol. This presentation will integrate current relevant theories of complex trauma with practical interventions and resources for the EMDR therapist which are grounded in the AIP model. The workshop will include practice and discussion.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify five characteristic symptoms of dissociation.
- Describe the role of attachment injury and chronic abuse and/or neglect in creating and maintaining dissociative processes and individuated self-states.
- Compare the three phases of complex trauma treatment to the three prongs and eight phases of EMDR therapy.
- List three emotional regulation methods for use in EMDR phase 2 with dissociative clients and strategies for interacting with self-states.
- Identify three characteristic phobias which maintain dissociative processes.
- Utilize several techniques for titrating EMDR phase 4 processing with dissociative clients.
Prerequisite: Participants will have completed an EMDRIA approved basic training in EMDR Therapy (Part I & II).

About The Presenter
Originally from Pennsylvania, Bill has been a therapist in Orlando, Florida for over thirty years. He is an EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Basic Trainer and Consultant, and an EMDR R-TEP/G-TEP trainer – having provided the Orlando training in response to the Pulse nightclub shooting. Since the onset of war in Ukraine, Bill has been active in supporting Ukrainian therapists by providing G-REP, G-TEP, training and consultation.
Bill’s special interest in complex trauma and dissociation began during his fifteen years as a therapist in an AIDS support agency. Along with Reg Morrow Robinson, he facilitates a Master Class for Complex Trauma.
Philosophically grounded in the humanistic tradition, Bill utilizes EMDR therapy as his primary modality with great attention to attachment injury and early life trauma. In an independent practice setting treating adults, Bill seeks to remove obstacles to growth; allowing clients to live more freely in the present while engendering greater hope for the future.
