Hutchinson - Big Blooms - Workshop
The Workshop is nonrefundable.
In this workshop, you will paint bold, rich blooms with big juicy washes. You will learn how to manage your water and pigments to create soft color transitions, build up color intensity, and retain highlights in your flower petals. A reference image will be supplied to transfer onto your watercolor paper.

Here are some tools that will help you with this painting. Please bring these along with your regular watercolor supplies to the workshop.
Paper
For this workshop, we will paint on a quarter sheet (11” x 15”) of cold-press watercolor paper.
I like to use Arches 140# cold press. Extra watercolor paper for practice exercises.
Paint – A variety of reds and yellows. Use colors that you like and flow easily. These include colors such as:
- Permanent rose or Quinacridone Red
- Alizarin Crimson
- Quinacridone Gold
- Quinacridone Violet or Magenta
- Cobalt Blue
Brushes
We will be using large brushes for one of these paintings. Natural brushes that hold a lot of water work well for creating your washes and synthetic brushes with nice tips are great for applying strong pigment.
Miscellaneous Materials
- You will want a smooth, non-porous support surface that is larger than your paper. I also recommend a prop that will allow you to tilt your support surface. I use an old rolled-up bath towel which can also be used to catch drips.
- Three or four small cups for your paint washes. I use recycled single-serve yogurt cups.
- A spray bottle for clean water.
- Saral Transfer paper to transfer the reference image onto your paper.
