Rod Building
Want to learn how to build your own fly rod but don't know how to start? Join our Rod Building Class and learn how to prep and spine the blank, attach the reel seat and grip, and wrap and finish the guides and ferrules.
You have the option to build one of three rods:
- A 6'6" two weight, four piece rod on a Batson Unity blank
- A 7'6" three weight, four piece rod on an MHX Blank
- A 9' five weight, four piece rod on a CRB blank
All rods kits include an up-locking, gun smoke finished reel seat with a mortised maple burl spacer, upgraded Snake Brand Guides, thread, color preserver, thread finish, small hand tools as well as a hand rod wrapper and rod turner. They do not include a rod sock or tube.
Instruction will take place at our clubhouse (Izaac Walton Clubhouse in Fairmont Park) on three different Saturdays: February 1, and February 8, and March 1 from 9:00 am to noon.
Each student will need to bring a roll of 5/8" or 3/4" masking tape, a measuring tape at least 6' long, a small pair of scissors and single edged razor blades or utility knife blades.
Helpful but not essential: hands free magnification, vernier or digital calipers, cuticle nippers, drafting compass with metal tips, Kim Wipes or similar lint-free wipes. I use all of these, but they are all optional. If you have any of these, bring them with you, if not, don't go out and buy them until you see what works for you.
Class size is limited to 5, there is no minimum. Registration deadline is January 11th
Restricted to club members and first time students of the class.
