LTA Coach (Level 3)

Introducing the new LTA Coach (Level 3) qualification.

This course is designed for you to

  • Deliver excellent individual lessons
  • Deliver excellent group lessons
  • Develop knowledge of the 6 areas of competency (Tactical/Technical/Physical/Mental/Social/Competition)
  • Understand your key off court responsibilities
  • Understand how to develop a player over a series of lessons
  • Gain experience with expert coaches and develop your coaching philosophy
  • Develop excellent feeding and demonstration skills
  • Gain knowledge on important topics for coaches including programme development and nutrition

Course Pre-Requisites

  • Hold the LTA Instructor qualification (or Level 2 equivalent
  • Be LTA Accredited or hold a DBS/PVG Enhanced Check with Child Barred List certificate applied for in the past 12 months through LTA/Tennis Scotland (volunteer certificates cannot be accepted). A DBS can be accepted if you are on the Update Service - see here for more details. Please note that it may take at least eight weeks for a DBS to be processed and you must hold a valid LTA DBS certificate upon booking.
  • Have (or have had) a rating of 6.1 (post 2003) or better, have successfully completed the Coach Readiness Test or have previously completed a Play Test (at a minimum of Grade 1). The Readiness Test can take up to two weeks to be assessed once submitted - please allow sufficient time for this when signing up for the course.  

Course Structure

The new LTA Coach qualification features 9 days of face-to-face training covering four modules. Each module begins with an online call with the tutor where the course content will be explained in advance. Attendance on all virtual and face-to-face elements of the course is essential to pass the course.

  1. Observation and Analysis (Days 1-3)
  2. Improving Your Players (Days 4-5)
  3. Group Coaching (Days 6-7)
  4. Coaching Specific Groups & Preparation for Assessment (Days 7-9)

To pass Core Training, you must:

  1. Attend all four remote sessions
  2. Attend all nine days of face-to-face training
  3. Complete all coursework
  4. Book and attend two qualifying elective modules (these modules are booked and paid for separately to Core Training).

As part of your coursework, you must complete 9-hours of on-court work experience.

Assessment

Once Core Training has been completed, Assessment is booked directly with the LTA. This accounts for 60% of your final grade, with Core Training representing 40%. Your assessment is:

  • Video based
  • 45 minutes in length
  • Individual lesson
  • Graded by the LTA's Assessor Team
  • Booked via the LTA's 'Find a Course' Tool
