Storytelling is as much cultural as it is creative and archival. All genres tackle the genesis of power, the paths to liberation, and illustrate the expansiveness of the ways individuals and communities experience the world. Diving into works from fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, this two-session class invites participants to join in an exploration of how narrative and social commentary intersect and strategies on applying this in our work. Classes will include interactive writing prompts and invite participants to examine how social justice presents itself in examples of works such as Deaf Republic by Ilya Kaminsky (Graywolf Press, 2019) to Pet by Akwaeke Emezi (Make Me a World, 2019) to Heavy by Kiese Laymon (Scribner, 2018).
