Introduction to Fly Fishing on the Water Class at the Owens River
This class is intended for anyone who wants to learn how to fly fish with an indicator. It is great for beginners or anyone wanting to improve their nymphing skills. It will be taught by Fred Rowe of Sierra Bright Dot Guide Service, a professional fly fishing guide with extensive experience fishing the waters of the Sierras. Check them out at sierrabrightdot.com. The class is limited to 6 students to maximize the one on one dynamic, but if we have enough folks sign up on the waiting list, Fred can bring in another guide. Weather and water conditions will determine the actual fishing destination.
You will learn how to rig your gear and will receive instruction on wading, casting, mending and, hopefully,—landing fish! Each student will be put on the water and will spend some time one on one with the instructor. Everyone should have a good learning experience.
Students will need to provide their own gear: chest waders, wading boots (felt soled preferred), and a 9’ to 10’, 3 to 5 weight fly rod with a floating line. A landing net (no knotted nylon nets, this is catch and release, not catch and kill!) and wading staff are highly recommended. Don't forget water, snacks, rain gear, and sun and bug protection to keep safe and comfortable on the water. A limited amount of gear will be available on loan for the day of the class, speak to Kurt at the pre-trip meeting on March 12.
For rigging, you will need a few 7 1/2’, 5X nylon leaders and some 5X Flourocarbon tippet, some small split shot in size 1 and BB and a few small indicators (Airlock or Oros indicators are a good choice).
For flies have some size 16 hear's ear nymphs, size 18 bead head flash back pheasants tails and zebra midges in size 18 or 20. A few parachute Adams or Parachute Blue Wing olive dry flies in size 18 would be handy if you see rising fish. This time of year caddis hatches are a possibility, have some size 16 or 18 elk hair caddis dry flies too.
Students will need to find their own lodging. Bishop has many hotels and motels that are reasonable and there is camping at Pleasant Valley Reservior Camp Ground as well as other local camp grounds.
We will meet for dinner at 6:00pm Friday March 28 in the back room at Taqueria Las Palmas in Bishop.
Come to the pre-trip meeting on Tuesday March 11 at 7:00pm at the Clubhouse for a more comprehensive discussion on gear, accommodations in Bishop and more. You can contact Kurt Marcks by phone at 951 255-6801 with any questions. You can also reach out to Fred Rowe at roweboat52verizon.net.
Note: You need to be a member of Deep Creek Fly Fishers to take this class. Go to our website at deepcreekflyfishers.org to join. In case of cancellation refunds will only be made if another student fills that spot and if the class is full. No refunds will be issued for no shows. Due to limitations to class sizes and differing skill levels please do not register for both on the water classes this weekend.
