NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home Course

Prerequisite: This course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm). It is much more than just a routine shooting course, however, because it prepares individuals for the responsibility of carrying a personal protection firearm in public, it is important that participants have sufficient maturity and life experiences to be able to assess various situations and make mature, appropriate decisions about those situations.

This is the third course in the NRA Basic Personal Protection Series and is based on the building-block approach, moving from the simple to the complex.

Prospective participants must possess the basic defensive pistol skills and demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home Course Certificate, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.

Description: This is an fourteen-hour course. The PPOTH Course will be offered in two levels Level 1 Basic and Level 2 Advance this course is a combined course, consisting of both Level 1 & 2. Students should expect to shoot approximately 200 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic and Advance defensive shooting skills, this course is based on objectives, strategies for outside the home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, Use of cover and concealment, drawing from concealment, holsters and magazines/speed loaders, firearms and the law, defensive accuracy and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

Note: Lesson III of this course: Firearms and the Law, and Legal Aspects of Self-Defense, is conducted by an attorney licensed to practice law within the state in which this course is given and who is familiar with this area of the law, or a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) who possesses an intermediate or higher Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificate granted within the state, or an individual currently certified to instruct in this area of the law by the state in which this course is presented. NRA Certified Instructors may conduct this lesson only if they meet the requirements stated above and then only in their capacity as an attorney, or other state certified individual not in their capacity as an NRA Certified Instructor.
