What is Big Wall Climbing?
Big wall climbing involves ascending large rock faces that typically take multiple days to complete. This introductory course focuses on the fundamental techniques and systems needed for longer routes, including aid climbing, hauling, and wall logistics.

Climbing Techniques

Following and Cleaning
- Following efficiently with aiders/etriers
- Cleaning gear on steeper terrain
- Short pendulum techniques
- Basic pendulum cleaning
- Managing traverses and diagonals
- Rebelays (rules and advantages on classic big wall push)
Hauling Systems
- Basic hauling mechanics and physics
- Different hauling systems and their applications
- Managing heavy loads safely
- Descending with loaded haul bags
- Rope management during hauling
Prerequisites
- Solid multi-pitch trad climbing experience
- Ability to lead climb confidently at grade 18
- Good physical fitness and endurance
- Basic rescue skills recommended
Duration
Two full days (16 hours total instruction)
Location
Selected based on conditions and course objectives. We utilize locations that offer appropriate terrain for learning big wall techniques.
