"Perfect Fit!" Alterations Class
Join this comprehensive class to learn the art of garment fitting and alterations. Develop skills in taking accurate measurements, adjusting seams and hems, and working with various fabrics to solve common fit issues such as waist, bust, or length adjustments. Students will bring garments to alter every other week, with guidance provided for each step. Prior knowledge of garment construction or pattern-making is helpful but not required.
Guest Instructor: Sarah Martin
Sarah Martin is a theatrical costume designer and sewing technician based in Kansas City. She holds a BFA in Theatrical Costume Design from Stephens College, where she specialized in historical fashion, pattern-making, and draping. With experience in bridal alterations, working with specialty fabrics, and a passion for teaching, Sarah brings her expertise to this class. 6-Week Curriculum Highlights:
- Measurements & Basics: Learn to identify fit issues, practice initial fittings, and discuss fabrics and techniques.
- Skirts: Hemming and waist adjustments using multiple methods.
- Pants: Waistband alterations, hem adjustments, and zipper repair techniques.
- Tops: Adjust shoulders, armholes, and sleeve lengths.
- Dresses/Rompers: Fit adjustments, including length and crotch alterations.
- Blazers/Formal Wear: Tailoring techniques, lining adjustments, and formal garment alterations.
This hands-on class emphasizes problem-solving and confidence-building, empowering students to trust their skills and make alterations independently.
