CLASS DESCRIPTION

This introductory hands-on workshop, based on John Huntington’s book Introduction to Show Networking, explores the basics of networks and how they work in show systems such as lighting, sound, video, and even stage machinery. Basic networking concepts, IP addresses and assignment methods, subnet masks, general network operations and physical topologies will be introduced through readings and lecture videos, and then explored through a day of hands-on labs done on participants’ PC or macOS laptops. Network device control will be explored, and other topics like VLANs, simple routing and broadcast storms will be demonstrated in group exercises.

INTRODUCTION
Once an attendee registers for a class, they are sent a link to a private introduction video and a private page with links for the class. A lot of information is covered in this course, and the pre-workshop preparation is critical for participant learning.

Students are given the following assignments to complete before the online review:

• Read the Introduction to Show Networking book (http://controlgeek.net/bookinfo/), and/or watch three approximately one hour lecture videos.
• Do online quizzes for each section.
• Install and test Packet Sender on your laptop: https://packetsender.com/
• Ensure that your laptop has a hard-wired ethernet jack or a USB adaptng.

ONLINE REVIEW MEETING
About a week before the hands on workshop day, there is a review session on Zoom. In the zoom, we review information from the reading and video lectures, and answer any questions from participants. If a participant can not attend live, they can send questions in advance, and the zoom is recorded.

Class price includes class materials, breakfast & lunch, and a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of the class. A $250 deposit is due at the time of registration to secure your spot in the class, with the balance due 2 weeks prior to the class start date.
