Veteran's Art Program: Cyanotype Workshop
Date: Wednesdays, Feb 5 & 19
Time: 5-7pm
Place: Room 18
This is a FREE art program for veterans ONLY. No experience necessary.
**All supplies will be provided by the instructor, but participants are encouraged to bring in personal items to print on day 2**
Did you know that architects used a chemical process called cyanotype to create copies of their plans before the invention of copy machines? Cyanotype literally means blueprint. Participants in this class will learn about the history and science behind cyanotype, multiple ways to produce prints, and multiple ways to treat their completed prints.
On day one, Tuesday, February 5th, we will briefly cover history and science, and make multiple prints using instructor provided materials. We will discuss what types of objects print best and troubleshoot ways to improve our print quality.
Between classes, students are encouraged to send the instructor digital images that are meaningful to them. The instructor will turn those images into negatives that can be used in the next class. In addition to digital prints, students should be searching their homes at this time for objects like lace and glassware to print on day two.
On day two, Tuesday, February 19th, we will tone and color our prints from day one with various dyes and art materials as well as make prints using our own negatives and objects from home.
About the instructor: Rikka Walters
Rikka grew up in rural Ryegate, MT and never took an art class until she entered college. After her first experience in a studio art class, Rikka was hooked! She changed majors and began her education in visual art. Rikka earned her B.A. in Fine Arts from UM in 2002 and her M.A. in Education from MSU-B in 2021.
Rikka has taught afterschool art programs and youth pottery classes in Missoula, MT as well as running the youth art program at the Boys and Girls Club in Lompoc, CA. She is currently teaching high school art at Paris Gibson Education Center since 2021.
Instructors specializing in their trained media lead classes each month, allowing participants to explore many different art mediums throughout. This program is ongoing, but registration only opens two months at a time. All participants are required to register for each class by calling the museum or registering online.
The Square and Great Falls Vet Center have partnered to provide local Veterans a space for healthy creative expression through multiple art forms, for free.
