II: Generative AI for Equitable Teaching with Dr. Tazin Daniels

Generative AI for Equitable Teaching: Strategies and Insights

In an era where generative AI is reshaping educational landscapes, it is crucial for educators to harness these tools in ways that promote equity and inclusion. This 1-hour workshop is designed to guide faculty and administrators through the integration of generative AI into their teaching practices while aligning with the five elements of Equity-focused Teaching: critical engagement of difference, structured interactions, academic belonging, transparency, and flexibility. Participants will explore how to leverage generative AI to enhance learning experiences, foster student engagement, and uphold academic integrity. Through practical examples and interactive discussions, the workshop will address the challenges and opportunities AI presents, ensuring that its implementation supports all students equitably. By the end of the session, attendees will be equipped with strategies to create more inclusive and effective learning environments using generative AI.

Learning Objectives:

    1. Identify the key principles of Equity-focused Teaching and how they apply to the use of generative AI in the classroom.
    2. Analyze the potential impact of generative AI on student engagement and learning outcomes, particularly in diverse and underrepresented student populations.
    3. Develop strategies for integrating generative AI into course design that promote equitable access and academic belonging.
    4. Design transparent policies around the use of generative AI that clearly communicate expectations and address equity challenges.
  • 5. Implement flexible teaching practices that adapt to the evolving nature of generative AI and the diverse needs of students.
